Affogato is an Italian dessert of gelato “drowned” in espresso. The word affogato in Italian means “drowned.” It comes from the root affogare which means “to drown.”
Whenever I’ve had this dessert in Italian restaurants, they usually crumble almond cookies on top to complete the delicious dish.
This Christmas I happen to have some leftover chocolate chip cookies. I’ll be crumbling them over top of my affogato.
Here’s how to make it.
In a dessert dish or glass, add two small scoops of vanilla gelato. Pour over a shot of espresso, crumble cookies on top, and enjoy.
The hot espresso makes the gelato all melty and scrumptious. The cookies add a little crunch.
Yum!
