Let’s discuss something that affects many of us, often without us even realizing it: inflammation.

I’m going to give you some powerful tools to fight it, and they are right in your kitchen.

What Is Inflammation?

Inflammation is your body’s natural response to injury or infection. When you get sick or injured or even when you get a bug bite, your body goes into action to repair the damage, and when you are healed, it shuts the emergency system down.

But when you’re not sick, the way you eat and your lifestyle can lead to chronic inflammation. When you eat sugary foods, fried foods, ultra-processed foods, or a high-fat diet, and you get little exercise, this low-grade, persistent inflammation can contribute to a whole host of problems. This happens slowly over time, and your body doesn’t know when to stop fighting. You can end up with joint pain, arthritis, digestive issues, autoimmune diseases, or more serious conditions like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and dementia.

The Culprits

It’s not just food that causes inflammation. Stress, smoking, poor sleep habits, and lack of exercise can all lead to inflammation.

But today we are going to concentrate on food. Our foods choices can cause harm or they can heal and repair.

When you’re younger you may be able to get away with some bad habits and not notice. But as we get older, this lifestyle is going to take its toll. We don’t always identify that food is the problem, we often think this is what old age feels like. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

The Solution

Now, you know what I’m going to say. The Mediterranean diet is the answer to everything. But in this article, I’m going to give you specific anti-inflammatory foods that can help you immediately.

These are foods packed with antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and phytonutrients that help bring your body back into balance.

1. BERRIES, and other fruits
Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, along with cherries, apples, pears, grapes, kiwi, melon, and mangoes.
The next time you are looking for a sweetie, choose one of these colorful fruits instead.

2. LEAFY GREENS and other vegetables
Vegetables are the key to everything. Dark leafy greens like spinach and collard greens have so many benefits, you should eat them every day. Also, make a point to eat broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, radishes, bell peppers, sweet potatoes, and beets.

3. HEALTHY FATS
Yes, some fats are healthy. Extra-virgin olive oil should be your oil of choice. You can also eat olives. Avocados are a good source of healthy fat too. Try adding slices to your sandwiches, or blend them into salad dressings to make them creamier. The fatty fishes like salmon and mackerel contain omega-3 fatty acids which are inflammation fighters.

4. SPICES AND HERBS
Garlic, ginger, turmeric, cayenne, cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper, basil, oregano, chives, cilantro, parsley, rosemary, sage, and thyme. Add them generously to your meals.

5. HEALTHY PROTEIN
Wild-caught fish, lean meats like turkey and chicken, beans, and nuts and seeds. Notice I didn’t say red meat or pork. Avoid processed meats like deli meats, hot dogs, bacon, and sausage.

6. COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATES
Whole grains, sweet potatoes, winter squash are good choices. Quinoa is excellent and versatile. Add a few spoonfuls to a salad.

Here are some easy ways to make anti-inflammatory food swaps:
